Are We Catholic? We are a Catholic Community under the spiritual authority of Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL., the Spiritual Director of the Renewal Movement in the Philippines. Who are Our Leaders? We are led by a Council of Elders, composed of lay leaders who have been with the community for a long time. The members of this council change over time, but as of this writing, the leaders are Hermie Morelos (Executive Director), Jill Ramiscal, Pio Espanol, and Roy Pasimio. Bo Sanchez, founder, serves as the main preacher of the Community. What is Our Mission? We want to share the light of Jesus to others as widely and effectively as possible through evangelism, discipleship, community, ministry, and worship. How Are We Structured? We are organized into small groups of four to seven members, called CARING GROUPS, the basic unit of our pastoral structure. In these small groups, we care for each other and encourage each other to continue growing in the Lord. A few CARING GROUPS then form a CHAPTER, and a few CHAPTERS form a DISTRICT. In Chapter and District meetings, various teachings are given for spiritual growth and outreach plans are discussed. CHAPTERS belong either to the COUPLES group, the SINGLES group, YOUTH group, or the TABITHA group for women—but they are mixed together in DISTRICTS. The community meets in CHAPTER meetings and DISTRICT assemblies, as well as in our evangelistic gathering called THE FEAST every Sunday of the month. Where Can I Start Attending? We invite you to THE FEAST, our monthly gathering at the The Arena, San Juan from 9:00AM-12:00 Noon. We will have worship, preaching, blessing, and Sunday Mass. How Do I Become a Member? If you wish to go deeper into our Communty life by joining a CARING GROUP, you can become a SHARERS OF THE COVENANT member when you complete the LIVING IN THE LIGHT Seminar and a GROWING IN THE LIGHT Seminar. These Seminars are given regularly in different places. For information on the schedule of these Seminars, call Tel. (02) 725-9999. What are Our Outreaches? Aside from building communities all over the Philippines and a few in other countries, we also established our outreach organizations. (1) SHEPHERD’S VOICE publishes the widest-read Catholic literature in the country; (2) ANAWIM gives a home to the poorest of the poor; (3) the LIGHT OF JESUS COUNSELING CENTER provides telephone and face-to-face counseling. How Did We Begin? The Light of Jesus Community, whose branches have extended far and wide today, began very humbly in September of 1980. A small prayer group of 20 attendees was formed in the garage of #56 Chicago St., Quezon City, the home of Gene and Pilar Sanchez. Bo, their fourteen year old son, led those Tuesday night prayer meetings. Not knowing what to name the prayer group, Pilar Sanchez asked two leaders of the Renewal Movement to pray for any inspiration they might receive. Without these two leaders speaking to each other, both called Pilar to tell her that the name should be “Light of Jesus.” It was indeed a God-given name, for it contained their primary mission to this day: to share the Light of Jesus to others, as effectively and widely as possible.
